Walter Ong writes about the different types of “warfare” that men and women engage in. Men engage in two types: 1.) real war, i.e., the need to kill an enemy and 2.) ritual warfare. Ritual warfare encompasses masculine pursuits like sports and verbal jesting. I think we have fewer and fewer masculine spaces for ritual warfare, which are crucial for male development. I appreciate your focus on the importance of masculine competition (ritual warfare).
